The National Pavements Technical Group (NPTG) is an Industry Sector Group established in 2008 consisting of pavement specialists from NZTA, Consultants, Contractors and Industry associations. The working party consists of 15 members that meet in person three times per year and twice online to progress the group’s strategic goals. For the current list of working party members, refer to the latest meeting minutes available via our linked in page at the link below.
All practitioners working within the pavements industry are encouraged to engage with the group and can nominate themselves as corresponding members to the group. Corresponding members are invited to join the in-person working party meetings and contribute to individual committees or working parties formed to progress the group’s strategic goals.
Objective
To identify, develop, document, maintain, and facilitate best practice for road pavement design, materials and construction activities in New Zealand so that;
• the wider industry, inclusive of contractors, suppliers, clients and consultants is made aware of and is encouraged to use best practice for designing and constructing pavements.
• best practice methods are reviewed and revised as required, to enhance pavement performance, efficient use of materials and construction methodologies.
Strategic goals
The workplan activities for the NPTG are split across three strategic goals:
1. Share existing knowledge
• Disseminate the workplan and progress of the NPTG to the industry
• Provide a conduit between the industry, corresponding members and the NPTG
• Encourage or facilitate presentations at conferences andpublish information online
2. Develop new resources
Developing new resources e.g. guidelines and technical advice notes, based on best practice
3. Build knowledge
Identify and promote opportunities to advance industry practices through evidence-based research
Individual committees or working parties, made up of a combination of NPTG working party and corresponding members, meet either in person or online to progress the workplan activities.
Where the group identifies an activity that will benefit the pavements industry but is beyond the scope of the NPTG strategic goals, we will communicate the opportunity to the relevant sector group.
Cross-sector alignment
Collaboration across the sector drives meaningful progress toward our shared objectives. The following table outlines key industry stakeholders whose work and influence are closely aligned with the priorities of the NPTG and its members.

Asset Owners
For project related design and construction, regional Specifications and Design Guidelines can be found on the asset owner websites, including NZTA or the road controlling authority relevant to the project’s region.
The REAAA calendar Event Programme — REAAA is a useful tool to find upcoming conferences and design courses across the roading sector, including content of interest to the NPTG and its corresponding members.
The AQA website includes training materials related to quarry products.
