"When should you use long-life road marking?"

presented by Brad Forrest, Inline Group

15 October 2026

When should you use long-life road marking?

  • Long-life marking costs more upfront and is often treated as the better option everywhere. It isn't. If you put it on a road that's due for a reseal, a layout that's about to change, or a contract with no money set aside for maintenance, you pay more and get nothing back.

In this 20-minute session Brad covers:

  • where long-life marking pays off over the life of the road: high-risk rural routes, high-wear sites, and places where traffic management makes repeat remarking expensive

  • surface suitability, and why the best material still fails on the wrong surface or in the wrong conditions

  • ATPM (audio tactile marking): where it works, where it doesn't, and the noise, cyclist and reseal risks to plan for

  • what to put in your specification and tender so the job isn't won on price alone

  • five questions to work through before you specify your next project

It's aimed at council roading and asset managers, NZTA project teams, network and maintenance contract managers, consultants, procurement staff and contractors.

Brad Forrest is General Manager of Inline Group, a family-owned road maintenance contractor based in Gisborne. He started with the business in 2012 on the tools, out on the road, and worked his way up to running it. He now co-owns it as the third generation of the Forrest family. Inline employs around 40 people and does line marking (including long-life marking), vegetation control, suction sweeping and drainage for NZTA, councils and main contractors.
