Traffic Sensor System

Presented by Mike Lusby WSP

30 April 2025

WSP has developed a traffic sensor system that is highly accurate, solar powered, easy to use and provide real-time data to any web-enabled device.

It can be used for traffic counting, managing work sites, understanding traffic flows, providing data to inform ongestion charging and much more. Would be handy for those REAAA members who don’t have large budgets for traffic related survey/monitoring. Also, much safer than having people out on the road with pneumatic tubes. The traffic sensor offers the following features:

  • Vehicles counts

  • Speed measurement

  • Vehicle classification by length standard.

The same vehicle classification system as used in RAMM so the data can be automatically binned. The data can be presented in near real time (per minute counts) on a Power BI dashboard that can be configured to your data needs.

The data can be viewed by anyone with access. For specific projects, cameras can also be linked to the sensors – using the WSP camera system combined with computer vision, for pedestrian counts, bus dwell times at stops – and this can also be added to the dashboard.

Mike has developed and commercialised a wide range of real time, high-quality, affordable instrumentation that is in use both nationally and internationally. Key recent projects are the real-time instrumentation of the Mangamuka Gorge SH1 Northland for NZTA (geotechnical slope monitoring). NZTA won the 2023 Vertical Heights Health and Safety Innovation award, and the project also won a highly commended at the International SOS award for its innovation in Health and Safety. A similar system has been in use on KiwiRail’s NIMT line on the Kapiti Coast in Wellington. This project won an ACE award in 2023 and has been nominated as WSP’s entrant in the World Digital Innovation Awards.
